Chapter 2 - THE VIDEO

Daniel Mercer arrived at the sheriff's substation wearing one dress shoe and one work boot.
"Where's my son?" he demanded.
Deputy Marisol Grant met him near the front desk. "Safe. He's with a paramedic. He's cold, shaken up, and his asthma was aggravated, but he's stable."
Daniel gripped the counter. "Where is Claire?"
"Separate room. Before you speak to her, I need you to watch something."
He followed Grant into a small interview room. Nora sat there, soaked to the skin, hands wrapped around a paper cup.
"I recorded it," she said.
Daniel looked at the phone.
Grant pressed play.
Then Ethan appeared on the screen, wrists bound, mud to his knees, trying to keep up with a horse in a thunderstorm.
Daniel's face emptied.
"No," he whispered.
Daniel leaned closer.
Claire pulled it from Ethan's pocket, held it up, and threw it into the ditch.
Daniel shot to his feet so hard the chair slammed into the wall.
"How dare you -"
He stopped because Grant raised a hand.
"There's more."
Daniel looked at her.
Nora rewound three seconds and zoomed in.
"Watch her left hand."
Claire bent beside Ethan. Her fingers worked at the rope around his wrists.
Daniel stared.
"She's tightening it," he said.
"Yes," Nora replied. "And look at the knot."
Grant froze the frame.
The rope did not simply loop around Ethan's wrists. It ran through a sliding knot attached to the saddle line. If the horse had bolted, the knot would have cinched tighter.
"She told me she was taking him sightseeing at the stables," he said. "She said he begged to see the horses in the rain."
Grant's expression hardened. "Mr. Mercer, your wife has already told us Ethan tied himself to the rope during a tantrum."
Daniel laughed once, without humor. "He's eight."
A paramedic opened the door.
"He's asking for you."
Daniel found Ethan wrapped in two blankets, face pale, hair still wet. He knelt and pulled him close carefully.
"Buddy, I'm here."
Ethan did not hug him back at first.
Finally, the boy whispered into his shoulder.
"Dad?"
"Yeah?"
"Don't make me go home with her."
"You won't."
Ethan's fingers tightened in Daniel's shirt.

"Because this wasn't the first time."
