Chapter 13 - THE HOSPITAL RECORD

Emily knew before anyone said her name.
Three years earlier, she had suffered a miscarriage at eleven weeks.
Only Daniel, Mia, and the hospital knew.
Emily had not told Margaret.
She had not told anyone else in the family.
Her throat closed.
“What does she have?”
Robert looked confused. “I don’t know. That’s all she wrote to me.”
Daniel turned toward Emily. “She shouldn’t know.”
“She doesn’t.”
Claire’s face hardened. “Then she got the record another way.”
Emily sat down.
The miscarriage had happened during Sweet Ember’s worst financial year. She had been working fourteen-hour days, sleeping badly, and blaming herself for everything even after two doctors told her there was no reason to.
Daniel knelt beside her.
“I’m sorry.”
She pulled her hand away.
“Don’t.”
He looked hurt.
“I can’t have you apologize for her every time she hurts me. I need you to help stop her.”
He nodded.
Robert called a former contact at the hospital’s compliance office.
By noon, they learned a disturbing fact: Emily’s record had been accessed seven months earlier by an employee in medical billing who had no reason to open it.
The employee’s name was Denise Cole.
Claire searched social media.
Denise’s sister was married to Victor Shaw’s cousin.
Emily felt sick.
Daniel called their attorney, Nora Patel.
Nora listened without interrupting.
Then she said, “Do not contact Margaret. Do not threaten her. Preserve everything. We may now be looking at privacy violations, forgery, attempted fraud, unlawful entry, and possibly conspiracy.”
“Possibly?” Daniel snapped.
“Daniel, anger is not evidence. We build the case correctly or we help her.”
Emily liked Nora immediately.
That afternoon, Margaret posted a new statement online.
She claimed she was being “silenced by a son under emotional control.”
Then came the sentence Emily had feared.
“There are painful medical facts about Emily’s past that I have protected out of compassion.”
Emily read it twice.
Her hands stopped shaking.
She looked at Daniel.
“She’s going to use my miscarriage against me.”
Daniel’s face turned white.
Emily stood.
“No.”
“What are you doing?”
“Taking away the weapon.”
