Chapter 8 - CLAIRE COMES HOME

Claire arrived the next morning on a red-eye flight from Portland.
Daniel met her in the driveway.
For three seconds they simply stared at each other.
Then Claire dropped her bag and hugged him.
Emily watched from the doorway as Daniel broke down against his sister’s shoulder.
“I should’ve called you,” he said.
“You should have believed me.”
“I know.”
Claire pulled back. “Do you?”
Daniel nodded.
Inside, Emily made coffee while Claire studied the damaged birthday cake still boxed in the refrigerator. Daniel had insisted on saving it.
“Evidence?” Claire asked.
“Maybe,” Emily said. “Or maybe I just wasn’t ready to throw away the thing she ruined.”
Claire gave her a sad smile. “I understand that better than you think.”
They spent two hours comparing timelines.
Claire explained the medication recording. Ten years earlier, she had discovered Margaret swapping labels on Thomas’s anxiety medication after an argument. Claire confronted her. Margaret turned it into a story about Claire abusing pills and threatened to send a falsified report to the company board where Claire had just started working.
Thomas believed Claire privately, but refused to expose Margaret publicly.
“He said he didn’t want the family destroyed,” Claire said. “So I left.”
Daniel stared at the floor.
Claire looked at him. “She didn’t start with Emily. She just found a new target.”
Emily’s phone buzzed.
Mia had sent a link.
Margaret was giving an interview outside a hotel.
In the video, she stood in dark sunglasses and a navy coat, looking exhausted and dignified.
“My son is under tremendous pressure,” she told reporters. “Emily has isolated him from his family. I pray he sees the truth before he loses everything.”
Then a reporter asked about the alleged loan.
Margaret sighed.
“I never wanted private family finances made public.”
Claire barked a laugh. “She leaked them.”
The reporter asked whether Margaret planned legal action.
“Yes,” she said. “Because my late husband’s wishes must be protected.”
Daniel leaned closer to the screen.
Behind Margaret, a man stepped out of the hotel.
Emily recognized him from a photo Daniel had shown her once.
Victor Shaw.
The private investigator.
Claire whispered, “That’s not good.”
Daniel paused the video and zoomed in.
Victor was carrying a black document case.
On the side was the logo of Sweet Ember’s largest grocery distributor.
Emily stood.

“She’s going after my contract.”
