Chapter 15 - THE COURTROOM

Margaret wore white to court.

Emily almost laughed when she saw her.

White coat. White blouse. Pearl earrings. Soft makeup. The picture of a wounded mother forced to protect her troubled son.

Daniel sat beside Nora at the petitioner’s hearing and never looked at Margaret.

Her attorney argued that Daniel had become irrational, had cut off family members, and was “transferring assets under his wife’s influence.”

Nora stood.

“Your Honor, this petition is not protection. It is retaliation.”

She submitted the original deed Thomas had signed, the hospital timeline showing he could not have signed Margaret’s later version, and preliminary handwriting analysis showing copied signature characteristics.

Then she submitted the fake Sweet Ember assignment.

Margaret’s attorney objected.

The judge allowed limited review.

Emily watched Margaret’s jaw tighten.

Then Robert walked into the courtroom.

Margaret turned.

Her face changed.

Robert took the witness stand voluntarily.

He admitted witnessing documents he had not seen signed. He admitted receiving $75,000 from Margaret. He admitted he now believed the codicil and later deed were fraudulent.

Margaret stared at him with pure hatred.

On cross-examination, her lawyer asked, “Mr. Merritt, are you testifying today to avoid your own legal exposure?”

Robert swallowed. “Partly.”

The courtroom murmured.

“Then your testimony benefits you.”

“Yes.”

“So why should anyone believe you?”

Robert looked at Claire in the gallery.

“Because I lied for Margaret for years. Today I’m trying to stop.”

The judge denied the incompetency petition within minutes.

Then she issued a temporary order preventing Margaret from transferring or encumbering the house until ownership could be determined.

Outside the courtroom, reporters surrounded them.

Margaret pushed through the crowd toward Emily.

“You think you won?” she hissed.

Daniel stepped between them.

Margaret pointed at him.

“You chose her over your mother.”

Daniel looked at her.

“No. I chose truth over fear.”

Margaret’s eyes filled with tears.

For one dangerous second, she looked like a mother instead of an enemy.

Then she whispered, “Your father said the same thing once.”

Daniel froze.

“What does that mean?”

Margaret smiled through the tears.

“He regretted it.”

She walked away.

Claire grabbed Daniel’s arm.

“Don’t chase her.”

But Emily had heard something else.

Margaret hadn’t said Thomas changed his mind.

She had said he regretted it.

That night, Claire opened the remaining files from the copied flash drive.

There was one audio recording they had never played.

It was dated two days before Thomas died.
