Chapter 18 - THE ARREST

Margaret did not make it to the elevator.

Two investigators from the district attorney’s office were waiting in the hallway.

Emily had no idea they would be there.

Neither did Daniel.

Nora did.

“This morning,” she explained quietly, “Victor’s attorney delivered the original message archive, payment records, and instructions regarding the forged deed. The DA moved quickly because of the filing.”

Margaret stopped walking.

One investigator identified himself.

“Margaret Merritt, we have a warrant for your arrest on charges including forgery, attempted fraud, and conspiracy.”

Her face went blank.

Then she looked at Daniel.

“Do something.”

Daniel did not move.

“I’m your mother.”

“I know.”

“You’re going to let them humiliate me?”

Emily saw the old reflex flicker across Daniel’s face—the trained instinct to rescue, calm, explain, protect.

Then it disappeared.

“You did this,” he said.

Margaret’s mouth opened.

No words came.

The investigators led her away.

Reporters learned about the arrest before they reached the parking garage.

By evening, every outlet that had repeated the “gold-digger baker” story was running corrections.

Lena Price recanted her statement through an attorney.

Denise Cole agreed to cooperate in the medical privacy investigation.

Victor entered negotiations to provide testimony.

Robert resigned from every remaining family trust role.

None of it made Emily feel victorious.

At home, she stood in the foyer and stared at the faint brown stain where the cake had hit the marble.

Daniel came up behind her.

“I can have that polished out.”

“No.”

He looked at her.

“Leave it for now.”

“Why?”

“Because I don’t want us pretending this place was always clean.”

He nodded.

Then Emily turned to him.

“There’s still something we haven’t dealt with.”

Daniel knew immediately.

“Me.”

“Yes.”

He sat on the bottom stair.

Emily stayed standing.

“You knew she was targeting me. You knew she had a file. You knew about the fake emails. And you kept trying to handle it by yourself.”

“I was afraid if I told you everything, you’d leave.”

Emily’s eyes filled.

“So you took away my choice.”

Daniel looked at the floor.

“Yes.”

That one word hurt.

But it was honest.

Emily sat beside him.

“I’m not asking whether you love me.”

“I do.”

“I know. I’m asking whether you can learn that love without honesty is still control.”

Daniel nodded slowly.

“I don’t know yet.”

Emily looked at him.

“Then that’s where we start.”

His phone buzzed.

It was Nora.

Margaret had made bail.

May you like

And she was requesting one meeting with Daniel before the grand jury hearing.
