Chapter 12 - My Daughter's Question

Daniel and I fought that night. Not about whether Eli deserved help. About the wall I'd built inside our marriage.

“I wish you'd told me,” he said. “I would have stood beside you nine years ago if you'd let me.”

“You weren't in my life nine years ago.”

“I mean after. Any day after.”

There was nothing to argue with. “I'm sorry,” I said. “I can't undo the lie. I can only stop lying.”

He took a long walk. When he returned, he said he wanted to meet with a counselor together. I agreed before fear could make me defensive.

Lily overheard enough to know we were unhappy. At bedtime she whispered, “Did you leave Eli because he was bad?”

“No, sweetheart. He was a baby. I was afraid and made a choice I still wish had been different.”

“Could you leave me?”

I took her hand. “No. And I'm going to show you and Eli that you can count on me.”

I knew a promise alone wouldn't convince either child.

Amanda called with a development. Eli had been approved for a temporary placement with a licensed family that knew Marisol. The county would consider family connection visits after confirming legal records and assessing everyone's safety. He had asked whether Lily could attend the next supervised visit.

“Of course,” I said, then stopped myself. “If he's comfortable.”

Later Naomi arrived with a copy of a county oversight notice. Horizon had recorded Eli's intake into a home he never entered. The listed receiving adult had signed a digital confirmation.

That adult had been out of the state on the date shown.

Naomi put her finger on the forged entry. “Now investigators have a reason to ask who entered this.”
