Chapter 15 - The Night of the Gala

I nearly stayed home from the Westbridge charity gala. Naomi advised me not to turn Eli's history into a public spectacle. I agreed. Whatever happened to Vivian and Horizon needed proper evidence, not applause or a screaming match.

Then I remembered Lily's note from school and decided I could ask the board for change without exposing a child's private life.

The ballroom gleamed. Behind the stage a banner proclaimed EVERY CHILD BELONGS. Gordon Pike stood beneath it talking to a donor. Principal Hale laughed at something he said.

My mother approached me before dinner. “Please don't do anything cruel.”

I stared at her. “You still think this is about hurting you.”

A school trustee asked me to speak about kindness. I stepped to the microphone with no prepared speech.

“A child was mocked and pelted with food outside our gates,” I said. “Adults knew. Some looked away. The child did not need a lesson about belonging. We did.”

The room quieted.

“I am asking this school to investigate the bullying honestly, safeguard children who report mistreatment, and make sure our charitable dollars reach the people they are supposed to serve.”

Hale lowered his eyes. Vivian sat completely still.

Afterward I left before dessert. It wasn't victory. A microphone couldn't feed Eli or repair what I'd done.

In the parking lot, Mrs. Torres hurried after me. “The board opened a formal review,” she said. “And there's something else. Gordon left in the middle of your speech.”

My phone lit with a call from Amanda.

“Claire,” she said, “county investigators just secured Horizon's placement records. There's a second child whose supposed transfer wasn't completed.”
