Chapter 10 - THE BRAKE LINE

Lily had never reported the damaged brake line because the mechanic told her it could have been corrosion.

Now Daniel had the car brought to a secure garage.

It was not corrosion.

The line had been sliced cleanly.

Victor stared at the mechanic’s photographs on the conference screen.

“You drove Ethan in this car?”

“Never,” Lily said quickly. “Only my own errands. Ethan always travels in your vehicles.”

Victor nodded, but his hands still shook.

“How long have you been carrying all of this alone?”

Lily looked away.

“I needed the job.”

“You could have died.”

“I know.”

That answer broke something in him.

Victor had built companies by noticing risk before everyone else. Yet inside his own home, people had been afraid to tell him the truth.

Not because he was cruel.

Because he was absent.

Because Serena had learned to stand between him and everyone who might challenge her.

He went upstairs and sat beside Ethan’s crib.

His son slept with his cast resting against his chest.

Victor whispered, “I’m sorry.”

Behind him, Lily said softly, “Being wrong isn’t the same as staying wrong.”

Victor looked at her.

Before he could answer, Claire called.

“We found something in the marriage agreement Serena’s attorney sent last week.”

“What?”

“A clause that wasn’t in the version you approved.”

Victor stood.

Claire continued.

“If you became medically incapacitated after the wedding, Serena would receive temporary authority over several personal trusts pending court review.”

Victor went cold.

“Who inserted it?”

“We’re tracing that now.”

Then Claire added, “Victor, there’s another problem.”

May you like

“What?”

“Your signature is already on that version.”
