Chapter 17 - THE SHOT

Victor hit the concrete as officers rushed from both sides.
The bullet struck a steel beam where his shoulder had been.
Chaos exploded.
Nathan’s two men dropped their weapons almost immediately.
The shooter did not.
A second shot came from the catwalk.
Then Daniel fired back.
The figure stumbled, disappeared behind the railing, and ran toward the rear stairwell.
Police caught her at the loading dock.
Serena.
Her hair was cut short. Her expensive clothes were gone. She wore black jeans, boots, and the flat expression of someone who had finally stopped pretending to be civilized.
Victor saw her through flashing police lights.
“You shot at me.”
Serena laughed breathlessly. “I missed.”
Nathan shouted from across the dock, “You idiot!”
Serena turned on him.
“Oh, now I’m an idiot?”
Police separated them.
Serena screamed over an officer’s shoulder.
“Tell him, Nathan! Tell him who switched Rebecca’s car!”
Victor stopped breathing.
“What?”
Nathan’s face went gray.
Serena saw it and smiled.
Victor walked toward her despite officers trying to hold him back.
“My wife died because a truck crossed the center line.”
Serena’s smile faded.
“That’s what the report said.”
Victor’s voice shook. “What are you talking about?”
Nathan shouted, “She’s lying!”
Serena looked directly at Victor.
“I wasn’t your uncle’s first solution.”
The dock seemed to tilt.
“Rebecca found out someone was moving money out of Blackwood Holdings,” Serena said. “She was going to tell you.”
Victor could barely hear her over his heartbeat.
“What did Nathan do?”
May you like
Serena leaned closer as the officer cuffed her.
“He made sure she never got the chance.”
