Chapter 16 - THE TRAP

Detective Ellis wanted Nathan arrested immediately.

Claire wanted more.

“His lawyer will say he meant buyout documents, not Ethan’s trust. We need him tying himself directly to Serena’s actions.”

So they set a trap.

Victor called Nathan back and pretended fear had finally beaten anger.

“I want this finished.”

Nathan sounded pleased. “Then act rationally.”

“Where?”

“A warehouse on Dock Nine. Midnight.”

Victor brought a fake trust binder fitted with a transmitter.

Police filled the surrounding blocks with plainclothes officers.

Lily hated the plan.

“You have a son.”

“I know.”

“Then stop acting like you’re the only person allowed to risk yourself for him.”

Victor looked at her.

It was the first time anyone had spoken to him like that in years.

“You’re right.”

But he went anyway.

At midnight, Nathan waited under a warehouse light with two men Victor did not recognize.

Serena was not there.

“Where is she?” Victor asked.

Nathan smiled. “Still useful.”

Victor held up the binder.

“You hurt Ethan for this?”

“I never told her to hurt him.”

“But you knew.”

Nathan’s expression did not change.

“I knew she could be persuasive.”

Victor took one step closer.

“And Paul Danner?”

Nathan’s eyes narrowed.

“You’ve been busy.”

“Did you kill him too?”

Nathan laughed softly.

“No. Serena did not need me back then.”

That was enough to establish knowledge of her past.

But before police could move, one of Nathan’s men shouted.

A red laser dot appeared on Victor’s chest.

Then a gunshot shattered the warehouse light.
