Chapter 13 - THE RECORDING

Maya's escort moved instantly.

Pierce's hand came back up holding a phone.

"Relax," he said. "I'm calling counsel."

Maya almost laughed.

"Good. Call two."

What Pierce did not know was that the conference room had been wired under a federal warrant twenty minutes earlier.

Every word was already recorded.

He was arrested before sunset.

Victor was arrested the next morning on obstruction, witness intimidation, and conspiracy charges.

The slap charge looked tiny beside them.

But the public remembered it.

They remembered the raised hand.

They remembered Maya refusing to move.

They remembered the words learn your place.

At his first hearing, Victor entered court surrounded by attorneys.

Maya sat behind the prosecutors.

He turned and saw her.

For a moment, he looked exactly as he had in seat 2B - angry that she still existed in a space he believed belonged to him.

Then his attorney whispered something.

Victor smiled.

The prosecutor stood.

"Your Honor, the government has been informed that a critical witness, Lena Ortiz, is missing."

Maya's stomach dropped.

Lena had been under protection.

She was supposed to testify in forty-eight hours.

The arrest did not feel triumphant. Maya watched agents lead Pierce past portraits of former administrators and felt only exhaustion. Institutions loved to describe corruption as the work of a few bad actors because that meant the building itself remained innocent. She no longer believed buildings were innocent. Policies, incentives, silences, promotions - all of it could teach decent people what not to see. Victor's slap had been personal. The machinery behind him was not.

Now nobody knew where she was.
