Chapter 9 - THE WHISTLEBLOWER

The unknown number sent a location at 1:13 a.m.
An all-night diner off Peña Boulevard.
Maya arrived with Priya and two federal investigators.
A woman in a red coat sat alone in the back booth.
"My name is Lena Ortiz," she said. "I was Meridian's maintenance compliance director until three weeks ago."
Maya sat across from her.
"Why contact me?"
"Because I watched them bury your brother."
The words hit harder than Victor's slap.
Lena slid over a folder.
Inside were internal emails from Victor Langston, Malcolm Voss, and Meridian's chief operating officer.
One subject line read:
BROOKS EVENT - CONTAINMENT.
Maya's breathing changed.
Lena said, "Jonah reported the brake issue himself. He refused the aircraft. Corporate sent another supervisor to sign it off. After the crash, they changed the sequence of events."
"Why didn't you speak then?"
Lena looked down. "Because they threatened my daughter."
A black SUV rolled slowly past the diner's front windows.
Then again.
Priya noticed it too.
"We need to move."
The lights went out.
Glass shattered near the kitchen.
Someone shouted.
Maya pulled Lena to the floor as a metal object crashed through the window and rolled beneath a table.
Smoke began pouring out.
Lena grabbed Maya's sleeve.
"They know I have the original server key."
"Where is it?"
Lena looked terrified.

Lena admitted she had copied files for months before resigning. She had watched mechanics write detailed defect reports only to see corporate supervisors replace them with three harmless words. She had heard managers joke that passengers could not complain about problems they never learned existed. Maya asked how high it went. Lena gave a tired laugh. 'High enough that everybody below them learned not to look up.' Then she slid across a second envelope containing names Maya recognized from government meetings.
"With your brother's widow."
