Chapter 20 - SEAT 2A

Six months later, Maya boarded Meridian Flight 611 to Denver.

The airline looked different now.

New leadership.

New maintenance oversight.

New reporting rules that protected mechanics and pilots who refused unsafe aircraft.

Erin met her at the door.

"Welcome back."

"I was promised a window."

"You were promised nothing."

They both laughed.

Maya sat in 2A.

A little boy across the aisle stared at her.

"Are you the lady from the video?"

His mother looked embarrassed. "Evan."

Maya smiled. "Probably."

"Did that man really hit you?"

"He did."

"Why didn't you hit him back?"

The cabin quieted around them in that strange way airplanes do when one honest question travels farther than expected.

Maya thought about Jonah.

About Victor.

About Daniel's guilt, Lena's fear, Erin's courage, and every person who had watched something wrong and decided whether to look away.

"Because being strong isn't always about hitting back," she said. "Sometimes it's about staying calm long enough to make sure the truth survives."

The boy nodded as if storing that somewhere important.

Outside the window, sunlight spread across the wing.

Maya watched the control surfaces move during taxi.

Everything looked exactly as it should.

Erin stopped beside her.

"Shade okay?"

Maya looked out at the runway.

"Leave it open."

The engines rose.

The aircraft began to move.

And this time, nobody asked her to learn her place.

As passengers settled in, Maya noticed that seat 2B remained empty until the last minute. A nervous college student finally dropped into it, glanced at her, and immediately blurted, 'I swear I don't care about the shade.' Maya laughed so hard Erin had to turn away to hide her own grin. The joke loosened something that had been tight in Maya for months. For the first time, Flight 611 was not the place where she had been struck. It was simply an airplane going somewhere.

She already knew it.
