Chapter 19 - CLEARED

Three weeks later, Maya received a letter with no ceremony.

ALL ETHICS ALLEGATIONS DISMISSED.

REINSTATEMENT EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY.

She read it twice and put it on the kitchen counter.

Claire arrived that evening with Jonah's children.

His son carried the repaired model airplane.

"Mom says Dad would want you to have it."

Maya crouched.

"I think he'd want you to keep it."

The boy considered that.

"Can we share it?"

Maya smiled through tears. "Yeah. We can share it."

The next morning she returned to headquarters.

People applauded in the lobby.

She hated that part.

Priya met her at the elevator.

"You have thirty-seven new fleet reviews waiting."

"Of course I do."

"And the secretary wants to offer you a new position."

"What position?"

Priya grinned.

"Director of Independent Safety Enforcement."

Maya stared.

"That's not a real office."

"It is now."

Her phone buzzed.

A message from Erin appeared.

FLIGHT 611. SAME ROUTE. SEAT 2A IS OPEN.

Maya looked at the invitation for a long time.

Then she typed back.

Maya's reinstatement meeting was brief. The acting administrator apologized for the agency's failure and promised reforms. Maya accepted the apology without comforting him. She had learned that women were often asked to make institutional remorse easier for the institution. Instead she handed him a six-page list of changes: independent defect reporting, protected whistleblower channels, random audit teams, and automatic review when maintenance language repeated across aircraft. 'If you mean the apology,' she said, 'build this.'

KEEP THE SHADE UP.
