Chapter 1 - THE WOMAN ON HER KNEES

At 9:31 on a rain-soaked Tuesday night, I was kneeling in birthday cake on the marble floor of a Lake Forest mansion.

Sixty people watched. Nobody helped.

Vanessa Whitmore stood over me in a white silk dress, smiling as if humiliation were part of the entertainment.

“Clean it up,” she said.

“My delivery was for the kitchen.”

“And you dropped it.”

“You knocked it out of my hands.”

A few guests looked away.

Vanessa didn’t.

She slapped me.

The room went silent.

I had spent eight years pretending the fighter I used to be no longer existed, though eleven years of martial arts had taught my body otherwise.

Balance, distance, timing—how to put someone down before they understood the fight had started.

But my mother needed dialysis.

Rent was overdue, and one complaint could cost me the app.

So I breathed.

Vanessa crouched.

“People like you should learn gratitude.”

I said nothing.

Then she smiled.

“How is your mother, by the way? Still begging strangers to pay for her treatments?”

My blood turned cold.

I slowly raised my head.

“How do you know about my mother?”

Vanessa’s smile slipped.

She had said too much.

A tall man in a black suit stepped away from the fireplace.

Dominic Moretti.

The billionaire developer people in Chicago whispered about differently.

He stared at Vanessa.

“What did you just say?”

She ignored him and lifted her hand to slap me again.

This time I caught her wrist.

Her eyes widened.

I stood.

She tried to pull away.

I turned her arm, shifted my weight and placed her flat against the marble in less than two seconds.

No punch. No kick. Just control.

I leaned close.

“Don’t touch me again.”

Then Dominic said my last name.

“Carter?”

I looked at him.

His face had gone pale.

“Your father,” he whispered. “Was his name Daniel Carter?”

My stomach dropped.

“Yes.”

Dominic stared at me like he had seen a ghost.

May you like

Then he said the one sentence I had waited eight years to hear without knowing it.

“Your father’s death was not an accident.”
