Chapter 8 - WHAT MOM NEVER TOLD ME

I wanted to be furious, but I saw how terrified she had been.
Edward Whitmore visited three days after Dadâs funeral with flowers, a lawyer and a threat wrapped in sympathy.
âHe knew about your tournaments,â Mom said. âHe knew everything.â
Edward offered a settlement. Mom refused.
Two weeks later, an anonymous foundation began paying her medical costs. When canceling threatened treatment authorization, she stopped asking questions.
âThey built a cage out of medical bills,â I said.
Mom looked down.
âYes.â
That night, Dominic came to our apartment.
I told him what Edward had done.
Dominicâs expression hardened.
âVanessa knows?â
âI donât know.â
âShe knew about Lindaâs illness.â
Dominic called his investigator.
Within an hour, we had the Whitmore Foundationâs payment history.
The latest renewal carried Vanessaâs signature. She had maintained the same pressure her father started.
Dominic closed his eyes.
âI was going to marry her.â
âThat sounds like your problem.â
âIt is.â
His phone buzzed.
He read the message.
Then looked at me.
âEdward Whitmore is flying back from Zurich.â
âWhen?â
âTonight.â
Mom went pale.
I asked, âWhy now?â
Dominic turned the screen around.
A private aviation alert showed Edwardâs jet.
Below it, another message from Luca:
Someone accessed the Moretti estate security archive.
Birthday footage deleted from internal server.
Dominic frowned.
âThe guests still have copies.â
âTheyâre not after the slap video,â I said.
âWhat, then?â
I remembered Vanessa repeatedly requesting me as her driver.
Seven weeks.
Seven weeks of cameras recording every arrival.
I looked at Dominic.
âDoes your gate scan license plates?â
âYes.â
âFaces?â
âYes.â
âDo you keep copies of IDs for delivery access?â
His face changed.
âAveryâŠâ
Then Luca called.
âA car is parked outside Ms. Carterâs building.â
I looked through the blinds.
May you like
Grant Pike was standing across the street.
And he was staring directly at our window.
