Chapter 13 - TWO DAYS AFTER DEATH

Dad stood outside a motel near Joliet.
Date stamp: two days after the factory accident.
He was injured.
Bandage on his forehead.
But alive.
On the back:
HE HAD A CHOICE.
Mom stared at it. āI buried him.ā
The original report said Dadās body was badly burned and identified through dental records.
I felt cold.
We had seen this trick before in movies.
Living it was different.
Investigators reopened everything.
Dental records had been supplied by a company-contracted physician.
That doctor died five years earlier.
The funeral home had changed ownership.
Records were incomplete.
Dominicās investigator found the motel clerk.
Retired.
Still alive.
He remembered Dad because Daniel had paid cash and kept asking whether a black sedan had passed.
āHe left with a woman,ā the clerk said.
āWho?ā
āDark hair. Maybe thirty. Nice coat.ā
Mom went still.
āVanessaās mother.ā
Everyone looked at her.
āCeleste Whitmore?ā
Mom nodded.
āDaniel knew her.ā
Dominic frowned.
āHow?ā
āBefore she married Edward, Celeste worked accounting at Halcyon.ā
The story widened again.
Celeste had access to financial records.
Maybe she helped Dad.
Vanessa had always spoken of her mother as if she had died from illness when Vanessa was young.
Public records confirmed Celeste Whitmore died seven years earlier.
One year after Dad.
We found her death certificate.
Car accident.
Luca discovered a storage unit rented under one of Celesteās maiden names.
Inside were boxes, a recorder and a passport belonging to Daniel Carter.
Mom sat down.
I could barely breathe.
The passport had stamps after his official death.
Mexico.
Belize.
Costa Rica.
The last stamp was six years ago.
Dominic whispered, āHe survived.ā
I wanted to believe it.
Then I found a sealed letter addressed to Mom.
Linda,
If Avery is reading this, tell her Iām sorry I chose disappearing over bringing danger home.
My knees nearly failed.
May you like
Dad had survived the accident.
And then he had chosen not to come back.
