Chapter 11 - BOX 14

First Republic Storage sat behind a row of warehouses on the industrial side of town.
Detective Ruiz obtained a warrant by noon.
The manager led us to a climate-controlled vault and opened a narrow steel door.
Box 14 was smaller than I expected.
Inside were three folders, a recorder, and a sealed blood-test packet.
The first folder held my paternity report.
99.99 percent probability Robert Reeves was my biological father.
Margaret had lied at the gate.
The second folder contained amendments to the Continuity Clause.
I read the final page twice.
My father had changed more than the age requirement.
If fraud was used to challenge the bloodline of an heir, the trustee responsible would immediately lose all voting authority.
Margaret’s entire position depended on keeping the fraud hidden.
The third folder was labeled EMMA.
My hands shook opening it.
There were printed emails between Emma and my father from the last weeks of his life.
Emma had discovered Graybridge months before Noah was born.
She warned him Margaret was moving company money through Leonard.
Dad replied that he was preparing to remove Margaret as trustee.
He never got the chance.
At the bottom of the folder was a handwritten note:
If something happens to me before the board meeting, give this to Daniel only after Noah’s bloodline is challenged.
Ruiz lifted the recorder.
“Ready?”
I wasn’t.
She pressed play anyway.
My father’s voice filled the vault.
“Daniel, if you hear this, Margaret has probably told you I was confused before I died. I was not confused. Leonard has been moving money for her. Emma found it. I believe they know she found it.”
Then my father said one name I had never heard before.
“Charles Benton.”
Ruiz paused the recorder.
“Who is Charles Benton?”
I stared at her.
May you like
“My mother’s brother.”
And he was currently Reeves Consolidated’s chief financial officer.
