Chapter 15 - THE MAN WHO SAID HE ONLY MOVED MONEY

Charles agreed to meet me in the empty boardroom before dawn.

No lawyers.

No assistants.

Just us.

I put Emma’s video on the screen.

He watched without blinking.

When Benton Family Capital appeared, he closed his eyes.

“You said Leonard hired Wade,” I told him.

“He did.”

“You said you only moved money.”

“I did more than that.”

The words landed quietly.

I wanted to hit him.

Instead, I gripped the back of a chair.

“Tell me everything.”

Charles stood and walked to the window.

“Margaret came to me when your father decided to remove her as trustee. She said Robert was humiliating her. She said Emma was turning you against the family.”

“So you stole from the company.”

“We moved money into accounts we controlled. At first it was about leverage.”

“And the DNA test?”

“Leonard’s idea. If Noah wasn’t recognized, the Continuity Clause stayed dormant.”

“And Emma?”

Charles’s voice broke.

“She found the transfers.”

I stepped closer. “Did you order her killed?”

“No.”

“Did Margaret?”

“I don’t know.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“I heard Leonard tell Wade to ‘stop the disclosure.’ I thought he meant steal her files. The next day she crashed.”

I stared at him.

“You could have gone to the police.”

“I was already guilty.”

That was the ugliest truth in the room.

Not everyone stayed silent because they were innocent.

Some stayed silent because the truth would expose their own smaller crimes.

Charles opened his briefcase.

“I kept one thing Leonard doesn’t know about.”

He handed me a microSD card.

“Graybridge recorded payment calls for leverage. I copied them.”

“Why?”

“Insurance.”

I inserted the card into my laptop.

The first audio file was Leonard.

The second was Margaret.

Her voice was unmistakable.

“Wade is not being paid to scare her anymore,” she said. “Emma has had enough chances.”

My uncle began to cry.

May you like

I didn’t.

Not yet.
