Chapter 16 - MARGARET’S VERSION

Detective Ruiz listened to the recording twice.
Then she obtained the warrant.
Margaret was arrested at a private club downtown before lunch.
She asked to speak to me.
I almost refused.
Then I thought about Noah at the bottom of the stairs.
I went.
She sat behind glass in a plain interview room, looking smaller without the mansion around her.
Still, she lifted her chin when I entered.
“You’ve embarrassed this family enough,” she said.
I laughed.
“Emma is dead.”
Margaret’s eyes flickered.
“You think I wanted that?”
“I heard your voice.”
“Then you heard part of a conversation.”
“What did ‘Emma has had enough chances’ mean?”
Margaret looked down.
“She was threatening to destroy the company.”
“She was exposing theft.”
“She didn’t understand what your father had done. Reeves Consolidated was overleveraged. The trust was the only thing keeping lenders calm.”
“That’s not what the records show.”
“Because Robert hid the real debt.”
I stared at her.
For the first time, she had said something that sounded less like manipulation and more like panic.
“What debt?”
She leaned toward the glass.
“Ask why your father created the Continuity Clause in the first place.”
“To protect family control.”
“No. To hide a liability that would activate when control transferred.”
“What liability?”
She smiled faintly.
“You think Noah inherits a company. He inherits a lawsuit.”
I stood.
“Nice try.”
“Daniel, there is a reason Robert delayed control until a child existed. He needed a successor trust to absorb what he did twenty years ago.”
“What did he do?”
She whispered two words.
“Red Creek.”
I had never heard the name.

But when I said it later to Charles, he stopped breathing.
Then he said, “Your father promised that file was destroyed.”
