Chapter 18 - THE STAIRCASE VIDEO

The main security system had been wiped.
The staircase camera had not.
Years earlier, my father had installed a small backup recorder inside the camera housing.
Margaret didn’t know it existed.
Grace did.
We watched the video in Detective Ruiz’s office.
Noah toddled into the foyer holding a wooden block.
Margaret appeared at the top of the stairs.
She saw him.
She walked down.
There was no accident.
No confusion.
She pointed toward the front door and said, “You should have never been born into this family.”
Noah reached for the railing.
Margaret put her foot against his side.
And pushed.
Grace covered her mouth.
I had already known.
Seeing it still broke something in me.
The video continued.
Margaret came down after him, not to help, but to pick up his wooden block and throw it aside.
Then she made a phone call.
“Leonard,” she said. “It happened. If Daniel gets emotional, use it.”
Ruiz stopped the recording.
“That changes tomorrow.”
It did more than that.
The next morning, Margaret’s attorneys tried to paint me as dangerous because I had hit her.
I admitted it.
“I lost control,” I told the judge. “I was wrong to strike her.”
Then Ruiz submitted the staircase video.
The courtroom went silent.
Margaret watched herself push a fifteen-month-old child down the stairs.
Her lawyer stopped taking notes.
The judge denied the request to suspend the trust and ordered that Margaret have no contact with Noah.
At 11:58 a.m., my phone buzzed.
The Continuity transfer had begun.
At noon, the audit activated automatically.
At 12:07, our forensic accountants found Graybridge’s final reserve account.
It contained $18.4 million.
And one outgoing transfer scheduled for that afternoon.

Leonard had never expected Margaret to win.
He had been preparing to run.
