Chapter 1 - THE WRONG MAID

The first thing Vanessa Sterling did after kicking the maid was turn toward the cameras and smile. The second thing she did was realize the maid had caught her ankle. Three hundred guests went silent beneath the crystal chandeliers of Whitmore House. Vanessa balanced on one silver heel, her crimson gown shimmering under the ballroom lights, while Naomi Reyes stood in front of her in a plain gray uniform, one hand locked around Vanessaâs leg.
Vanessaâs smile disappeared. âLet go of me.â Naomiâs voice was calm. âPlease donât make this worse.â A few guests lifted their phones. Instead of becoming embarrassed, she became furious.
âYou think you can touch me?â âYou kicked me.â âYouâre a maid.â Naomi released her ankle carefully. That should have ended it. It didnât. Vanessa lunged forward and slapped at Naomiâs face.
A gasp rolled through the ballroom. For one heartbeat, Vanessa stared at the fingers around her wrist like she had touched a live wire. Then Ethan Whitmore pushed through the crowd. âVanessa!â She twisted toward him.
âShe attacked me!â Naomi released her immediately and stepped back. âShe grabbed me in front of everyone!â An elderly man near the champagne table spoke quietly. âWe all saw who started it.â Vanessaâs cheeks burned. Ethan looked at Naomi.
âAre you hurt?â That question broke something inside Vanessa. Not Are you okay, Vanessa? Are you hurt, Naomi? Vanessaâs eyes filled with something colder than anger.
She raised her hand again. Naomi caught it a second time. This time Vanessa hissed, âWho the hell do you think you are?â Naomi looked directly into her eyes. Not fear.

Not rage. Recognition. The kind of calm that belonged to someone who had been in far more dangerous rooms than this one. Vanessa slowly pulled her hand free.
âWhat exactly were you before you became a maid?â Naomi did not answer. Across the ballroom, Ethanâs grandfather, Richard Whitmore, had already begun walking toward them. And unlike everyone else in the room, Richard knew the answer.
