Chapter 11 - VANESSA CROSSES THE LINE

Vanessa had not kidnapped Lily. Not intentionally. That was what she claimed later. She had only wanted proof Naomiâs past was âdangerous.â Colin Mercer had promised dirt.
Instead, he discovered Lilyâs new identity. And then he sold it. The buyer belonged to the same criminal network Lilyâs father had testified against years ago. By then, Lily was gone.
Police found Vanessa at her motherâs townhouse. She was pale and shaking. Ethan stood across from her. âWhat did you do?â âI didnât know.â âYou paid a man to investigate Naomi.â âYes.â âYou gave him money.â âYes.â âYou kept pushing after the party?â Vanessa began crying.
Vanessa flinched. Naomiâs voice was low. âWhere is Mercer?â âI donât know.â âYou met him last night.â âHe said he had something that would destroy you.â âWhat?â âA video from Philadelphia.â Naomiâs jaw tightened. âThere is no video.â âHe said there was.â Margaret stepped in.
âHe lied.â Vanessa looked confused. Vanessa had been so desperate to win a social war that she had handed a witnessâs identity to predators. Detectives traced Mercerâs last phone signal to an industrial district. Naomi immediately moved toward the door.
Ethan caught her arm. He released it. âSorry.â Naomiâs voice softened. âLily trusted me once.â âThis is police work.â âSheâs in danger because someone used my name to find her.â Margaret stepped beside Naomi.
âIâm going too.â Richard looked at them. âYouâre both insane.â Margaret smiled. But Naomi knew Lilyâs emergency protocols. There was one thing Lily had been taught to do if abducted.
Leave a pattern. Three marks. Always three. Naomi touched them.

âShe was here.â Then a muffled sound came from inside. A woman crying. Naomiâs entire body changed. Margaret saw it.
âRemember who you are.â Naomi nodded. Then they heard a man shout from inside. And a gunshot cracked through the warehouse.
