Chapter 13 - THE WHITMORE NAME

The scandal exploded. Videos from the engagement party spread across social media. Millions watched Vanessa kick Naomi. Millions watched Naomi catch her ankle without striking back.

Then leaked reports revealed the planted bracelet and private investigator. Whitmore Development’s board panicked. Sponsors called. Richard refused to hide.

At a press conference, a reporter asked whether the family planned to silence Naomi. Richard looked offended. “Why would we silence the only person in this story who behaved with dignity?” Another reporter asked if Ethan had been romantically involved with her. “Are you now?” Naomi, watching from a television in the staff cottage, nearly threw a cushion at the screen.

Ethan paused. “No.” It was true. At least for now. “I owe you an apology.” “For what?” “For allowing Vanessa’s behavior to continue because I thought family matters should remain private.” Naomi shook her head.

“You didn’t kick me.” “No. But people with authority are responsible for what they tolerate.” That sentence stayed with her. He offered her a year’s salary and paid leave. Naomi refused the money.

“You know, my security director is retiring.” “No.” “I didn’t finish.” “You didn’t need to.” For the first time, Naomi laughed freely. Then Ethan entered. Richard left them alone on purpose. Ethan looked uncomfortable.

Naomi smiled. “You answered correctly.” “I know.” A pause. Then Ethan said, “I’m glad you’re here.” Naomi’s smile faded. “Be careful.” “I’m not asking for anything.” “Good.” “I just wanted you to know.” Before she could answer, her phone rang.

She answered. “Ms. Reyes?” “Yes.” “This is Assistant District Attorney Paulson. Vanessa Sterling has requested a meeting.” Naomi frowned.

“Why?” The prosecutor hesitated. “Because she says Colin Mercer wasn’t the person who gave him access to Lily Carter’s identity.” Naomi went still. “Then who was?” Paulson’s voice lowered. “According to Vanessa, someone inside Whitmore House did.”
