Chapter 8 - THE KICK

âSay it again,â Vanessa whispered. Naomi looked around. Phones were already rising. âMs.
Sterling, this is not the place.â Vanessa laughed. âYou donât get to tell me what place this is.â Ethan moved toward them. âVanessa.â âStay out of it.â She turned back to Naomi. âYou serve people who matter.â Still nothing.
âYou wear a uniform because nobody would notice you otherwise.â Naomi quietly answered, âAre you finished?â That was the sentence Vanessa could not survive. She kicked. Her heel struck toward Naomiâs hip. Naomi moved instinctively.
Everything stopped. The quartet. The conversations. Even the servers.
Vanessa stared at her. Balance. Distance. Control.
She did not twist the ankle. She did not throw Vanessa. âPlease donât make me take this any further.â Vanessaâs face went red. âLet go!â Naomi released her.
Then Vanessa swung. Naomi caught her wrist. âVanessa!â âShe attacked me!â âNo,â three voices said at once. A guest near the front had recorded the entire thing.
Vanessa looked around and realized something terrible. For the first time in her life, the room was not waiting to agree with her. She yanked her hand away. He stood beside the staircase, staring at her with open disgust.
âGrandfather,â Ethan said. Richard ignored him. He looked at Vanessa. âYou will leave this house.â Vanessa laughed once.
May you like
âImmediately.â She pointed at Naomi. âBecause of her?â âNo.â Richardâs voice carried across the ballroom. âBecause I finally saw you clearly.â Vanessaâs eyes widened. Then she turned to Ethan.
âTell him.â Ethan stared at her. And in front of three hundred people, he removed the engagement ring box from his pocket. âI was going to wait until tomorrow.â Vanessaâs breathing stopped. âBut Iâm not marrying you.â
