Chapter 17 - The Package She Never Opened

Sophia drove home at dawn with a police escort and one terrible memory.

Three weeks earlier, a padded envelope had arrived at her apartment with no return address.

She had been traveling.

She tossed it onto the console table with unopened mail.

Then she forgot about it.

Now she ran upstairs and found the envelope exactly where she had left it.

Inside was a handwritten note from Rachel Kim.

Ms. Reed,

If this reaches you, I’m probably no longer at Atelier Cole. I tried internal channels. They changed my paperwork and threatened to blame me for missing inventory. Please don’t trust the numbers they show the board.

Beneath the letter sat a small black notebook.

The real ledger.

Pages of dates, gown numbers, fake insurance claims, off-book payments, and initials.

G.E.

M.S.

M.H.

Grant Ellis.

Martin Shaw.

Monica Hale.

But a fourth set of initials appeared repeatedly.

T.C.

Thomas Cole.

Sophia stared at them until the letters blurred.

Thomas had denied participating.

He had admitted only to silence.

The ledger suggested more.

One entry showed a cash distribution to T.C. on the exact day he approved a false insurance claim.

Another showed “board cover” next to his initials.

Edward sat across from Sophia’s kitchen table, hollow-eyed.

“My brother lied.”

Sophia closed the ledger.

“Everybody lied.”

Her phone rang.

Thomas.

She put it on speaker.

His breathing sounded ragged.

“Sophia, I need you to listen to me before the police come.”

“They’re already coming.”

“I never took the money for myself.”

“Then why is your name in the ledger?”

A long silence.

Thomas said, “Because I was paying someone.”

“Who?”

“Your mother.”

Sophia stood so quickly the chair fell backward.

Thomas rushed on.

“Not what you think. Eleanor made me move money where Martin couldn’t see it. She was building a case.”

Sophia gripped the phone.

“Prove it.”

Thomas whispered, “I can. But the proof is in the one place Grant never found.”
