Chapter 18 - Eleanor's Final File

Thomas led police to an old tailoring studio in Brooklyn that Atelier Cole had stopped using years ago.
Sophia recognized it immediately.
Her mother used to bring her there after school.
The place still smelled faintly of dust, wood, and fabric chalk.
Behind a row of obsolete pattern cabinets, Thomas removed a false drawer.
Inside was a metal cash box.
No cash.
Just files.
Eleanor’s files.
Bank statements showed Thomas had moved money into a private investigative account at Eleanor’s direction. Receipts showed payments to an auditor, a surveillance contractor, and a former detective.
Thomas had not been taking bribes.
He had been funding Eleanor’s investigation in secret.
“Why didn’t you say this earlier?” Sophia asked.
“Because I promised her.”
“She’s been dead for twelve years.”
“And I was afraid.”
There it was again.
Fear dressed up as loyalty.
Thomas handed her one final folder.
Inside was a recorded statement transcribed by Eleanor.
She believed Martin Shaw was the architect of the scheme and Grant’s father had been an early participant. She also believed Grant had inherited the operation and expanded it through employee coercion and off-book sales.
At the bottom of the statement, Eleanor wrote:
If Sophia ever takes control, tell her this company is worth saving only if the people inside it are worth protecting.
Sophia stopped reading.
For the first time since the glass of water hit her, she cried.
Quietly.
Edward put a hand on her shoulder.
She let him.
Then Detective Ortiz’s phone rang.
Her expression changed as she listened.
Martin Shaw had been arrested at a motel outside Philadelphia.
But there was another problem.
Rachel Kim had finally been located.
May you like
She was alive.
And she was refusing to speak to police unless Sophia came alone.
