Chapter 19 - Rachel

Rachel chose a public library in Queens.
She sat near the back windows with a paper cup of coffee and a backpack between her feet.
Sophia recognized her from the security footage.
Rachel looked younger in person.
More tired too.
“You got the ledger,” she said.
“I did.”
“Good.”
“Why disappear?”
Rachel looked toward the entrance.
“Because Grant told me he could make me the thief.”
Sophia sat across from her.
“He forged your signature.”
“He forged more than that.”
Rachel explained that Grant had used employee login credentials to alter inventory, then created records that made junior staff responsible for missing items. Anyone who questioned him was threatened with termination or criminal referral.
Monica enforced the culture on the floor.
Martin protected it legally.
“Why didn’t you go straight to police?” Sophia asked.
Rachel gave a bitter smile. “Because I had screenshots, not the whole machine. And because I watched people with money make problems disappear.”
Sophia thought of the salon clients who had watched Monica pour water over her and said nothing.
“I’m sorry.”
Rachel looked surprised.
“For what?”
“For owning the company and not knowing what it had become.”
Rachel studied her for a moment.
Then she slid the backpack across the table.
Inside was a laptop.
“The ledger is enough to prove fraud. This proves intent.”
The laptop contained archived emails Martin thought had been deleted.
One message changed everything.
Martin to Grant, six months earlier:
SOPHIA’S TRANSFER MUST NOT CLOSE. IF NECESSARY, CREATE AN ETHICS ISSUE THAT MAKES HER STEP BACK FROM CONTROL.
Sophia felt sick.
They had planned to discredit her.
The water incident had not been the plan.
It had been Monica improvising badly.
Rachel said, “There’s one more email.”
Sophia opened it.
May you like
The sender was Edward Cole.
Her heart stopped.
