Chapter 1 - The Crash

The scream came first.
Then the body hit the stairs.
Daniel Mercer was in the kitchen when the sound ripped through the house--a sharp cry, three violent thuds, then one sickening crack at the bottom of the staircase.
He dropped the glass in his hand and ran.
His mother, Margaret, lay twisted on the hardwood, one arm under her, gray hair across her face. Olivia was already on her knees beside her.
"Oh my God. Daniel! Call 911! She fell!"
Daniel froze for half a second. "Mom? Mom, can you hear me?"
Olivia reached toward Margaret's neck with shaking fingers. "I tried to catch her. She just lost her balance."
"Don't move her." Daniel grabbed his phone. "Mom, stay with me."
Then a small voice came from above.
"She's lying."
Daniel looked up.
Ethan stood behind the upstairs railing in dinosaur pajamas. His face had gone white.
Olivia turned so fast her hair snapped across her cheek. "Ethan, go to your room."
He didn't move.
"Buddy," Daniel said, already dialing, "what did you say?"
Ethan pointed at his mother.
"She pushed Grandma."
Olivia's mouth opened, but no sound came out.
"Ethan," she whispered, "you didn't see what you think you saw."
"I saw you." His voice broke. "Grandma said she was gonna tell Dad the truth. Then you grabbed her arm. Then you pushed her."
Daniel stared at his wife.
For one awful second, Olivia stopped acting scared and looked angry.
Then the mask came back.
"He's confused. He heard us arguing. That's all."
Sirens wailed in the distance.
Daniel knelt beside his mother, but his eyes stayed on Olivia. "What truth?"
Ethan's chin trembled.
"About the money," he said. "And the papers in Grandma's room."
Olivia went completely still.

The front door burst inward as paramedics rushed in.
And while everyone looked at Margaret, Daniel saw Olivia slip one hand into her pocket--and quietly pull out a small brass key.
