Chapter 19 - After Margaret Is Gone

The draft email was addressed to Kyle.
Olivia had written it two days before the fall.
After Margaret is gone, the medical POA solves the immediate problem. We move the house into North Star, sell it, clear Rook, then put the rest back into the trust before Daniel has any reason to look.
Kyle had never received it.
But the draft had been saved automatically.
The defense objected. The judge allowed it.
Daniel watched Olivia's face as the jury read her words.
For the first time, she looked defeated.
The jury deliberated for nine hours.
Daniel, Margaret, Rachel, and Ethan waited in a private room.
Ethan played cards with his grandmother.
"Do you think Mom hates me?" he asked suddenly.
Margaret set down her cards.
"No child is responsible for an adult's choices."
The bailiff opened the door.
"We have a verdict."
They returned to court.
Olivia stood.
Guilty of attempted murder.
Guilty of aggravated financial exploitation.
Guilty of identity theft.
Guilty of forgery.
Guilty of witness intimidation.
Count after count.
At sentencing, Margaret spoke first.
"You tried to turn my age into a weapon against me," she said, voice stronger now. "You thought if I was hurt badly enough, people would believe your papers instead of my words. You were wrong."
Then Ethan's written statement was read by Chen.
I miss the mom who made pancakes shaped like dinosaurs. I don't know if she was real. I hope she was. I also hope Grandma never has to be scared in our house again.
Daniel stared at the floor.
The judge sentenced Olivia to twenty-six years.
As deputies led her away, she turned toward Daniel.
"Tell Ethan I'm sorry."
Daniel did not answer.
Weeks later, a letter arrived from prison addressed to Ethan.
Daniel almost threw it away.

Then he saw the first line through the envelope window.
Ethan, none of this was your fault.
