Chapter 17 - What Margaret Hid

Margaret didn't deny it.

When Daniel repeated Olivia's threat, his mother looked toward the rehab window and said, "I knew she'd use that."

"Use what?"

Margaret asked Ethan to go with Rachel for ice cream.

Then she told Daniel.

After Robert died, Kyle had already owed nearly $90,000 to gambling lenders. Robert had secretly paid some of it. Margaret discovered the payments while settling the estate.

"I was ashamed," she said. "Your father hid Kyle's problem. I hid that your father hid it."

"Why?"

"Because Kyle begged. Because you were grieving. Because I thought I could save the family from one more wound."

The secrecy gave Olivia leverage later. She learned about Kyle's debt from old emails and used it to pull him into the new scheme.

Daniel rubbed his face. "So everybody protected everybody until the lies became a business model."

Margaret's eyes dropped.

"Yes."

"You should've told me."

"I know."

"Dad should've told me."

"I know."

"And none of that made Olivia push you."

Margaret met his eyes. "No."

Daniel told Chen to reject the plea unless Olivia accepted responsibility for the push as intentional violence and gave up any attempt to discredit Ethan.

Olivia refused.

Trial was set.

The week before jury selection, Ethan surprised everyone.

"I want to talk," he said.

Daniel crouched in front of him. "You don't have to be brave for us."

"I'm not. I'm scared."

"Then why?"

Ethan swallowed.

"Because Mom keeps saying I didn't see it. And I did."

Daniel's chest hurt.

Ethan looked at Margaret.

"Grandma told the truth even when Mom got mad. I can too."

That night, Chen called with one last discovery from Olivia's phone records.

The morning of the push, Olivia had searched three phrases online:

"elderly fall down stairs survival rate"

"brain bleed unconscious how long"
