Chapter 15 - His Father's Will

The USB drive held scans, emails, and one video.

Daniel watched it with Margaret beside him in rehab.

His father, Robert, sat at the old kitchen table. He looked tired but healthy. The date stamp was three weeks before his death.

"Danny," Robert said into the camera, "your mother thinks this is dramatic. She's probably right."

Margaret smiled through tears.

Robert continued. "I'm updating the trust because Kyle is in trouble again. I don't want his debts touching the family property. Your mother will remain trustee while she's able. After that, you become trustee. Not Olivia. Not Kyle. You."

Daniel looked at Margaret.

She nodded.

Robert held up a document.

"If anyone shows you a version naming someone else, it's not mine."

The video ended.

Ortiz compared it with the will copy Olivia had referenced at the hospital.

That copy named Olivia as successor trustee.

Another forgery.

"She planned further ahead than we thought," Chen said.

Margaret finally told them how she discovered the scheme.

A bank statement had arrived by mistake in paper form. She noticed a transfer. Then another. She pulled trust records and found the LLC. She checked Daniel's credit after he mentioned a strange collection call.

"Why didn't you tell me immediately?" Daniel asked.

Margaret's eyes filled.

"Tried. You... defended her."

He remembered.

A month earlier Margaret had said, "You need to look closer at your accounts."

Daniel had snapped, "Mom, stop treating Olivia like she's stealing the silverware."

He felt shame burn behind his eyes.

"I'm sorry."

Margaret squeezed his hand.

"I waited... too long too."

The prosecutor called later with new forensic results.

The forged will file had been created on Olivia's laptop six months earlier.

But there was something worse.

Metadata from the medical power-of-attorney form showed it had been created eleven days before Margaret moved into Daniel's house.

Before the staircase.

Before the argument.

May you like

Before any "moment of anger."

Olivia had been planning for Margaret to become helpless long before she ever pushed her.
