Chapter 16 - Elena’s Account

Arthur’s first reaction was anger.

Then he stopped.

Old habit.

Distrust the outsider.

He called Rachel before calling Elena.

Rachel investigated.

The account existed.

$900,000.

Named:

ELENA RAMIREZ, CUSTODIAN FOR LILY BENNETT EDUCATION RESERVE.

“Elena never told me.”

Rachel said:

“Because she cannot access it for herself.”

Grace created the reserve before her death.

Purpose:

Emergency relocation.

Elena served as independent custodian only if Arthur’s household became unsafe.

The account required dual approval from Rachel.

It was not a secret gift to Elena.

It was a safeguard.

She answered carefully.

“You found it.”

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“Why not tell me?”

“Because Grace told me the account was for an emergency.”

“And because you didn’t trust me enough to hear it.”

Elena said:

“Stop apologizing to me.”

“Okay.”

“Show Lily different behavior.”

“I’m trying.”

“I know.”

The education reserve had never been touched.

Victoria knew about it because Charles found references in estate emails.

She had assumed Elena could access it.

That was why Elena became a target.

Discredit Margaret.

Then access multiple pools of money.

The scheme looked sophisticated from a distance.

Up close, it was built from greed and family habits.

Rachel restructured both trusts with independent oversight.

No single family member could approve disbursements.

Arthur supported it.

Then his company board asked him to take emergency leave.

At first, he resisted.

Then he thought of Grace.

For the first time in years, Arthur came home before dinner every night.

One evening, Lily asked:

“Are you staying?”

“Yes.”

“For how long?”

“Tonight.”

She looked suspicious.

“Tomorrow?”

“Tomorrow too.”

She considered that.

Then:

“Okay.”

Then Officer Reed called.

Charles had disclosed one final document.

A life-insurance policy on Arthur.

Beneficiary:

But the contingent trustee listed was Charles Mercer.

Arthur went cold.

“Why would he need that?”

May you like

Reed answered:

“That’s what we’re trying to determine.”
