Chapter 17 - The Insurance Clause

The policy was legitimate.

Arthur had purchased it years ago.

The contingent trustee designation was not.

Charles had altered the administrative record during probate.

Not the beneficiary.

If Arthur died, Charles could have controlled incoming insurance funds temporarily until the court appointed someone else.

Potentially millions.

Arthur asked the question nobody wanted to ask.

“Was anyone planning to hurt me?”

Reed answered carefully.

“We have no evidence of that.”

No invented murder plot.

The proven crimes were enough.

Charles’s plan relied on opportunity, not violence.

If Arthur became unavailable through illness, accident, travel, or legal incapacity, Charles could step into financial control.

Victoria’s guardianship strategy would handle Lily.

Rachel corrected the designation.

The insurer froze changes.

Charles’s cooperation deal weakened as more misconduct surfaced.

Victoria’s plea negotiations continued.

Arthur’s anger became less explosive.

He stopped asking:

He started asking:

What protects Lily now?

Dr. Chen recommended predictable routines.

No surprise visitors.

No family conversations about money around Lily.

Arthur followed them.

Elena returned to work after her shoulder healed.

The first morning, Lily ran to her.

Elena had earned trust.

He had to rebuild it.

At breakfast, Lily spilled orange juice.

“It’s okay.”

“Really?”

“Really.”

He handed her a towel.

“Want help?”

They cleaned it together.

Elena watched silently.

Later, Arthur asked:

“What?”

“You looked.”

That afternoon, Victoria’s attorney sent notice.

The plea agreement was final.

Victoria would admit to financial fraud-related conduct, illegal surveillance, evidence tampering, and the intentional shove captured on video.

She would face sentencing.

Lily would not testify.

Arthur closed his eyes.

Then Rachel said:

“There’s one more decision.”

“What?”

“Victoria is asking whether she can write Lily a letter.”

Arthur looked toward the playroom.

His daughter was laughing with Elena.

He answered:

“Not now.”

Rachel nodded.

“When?”

May you like

Arthur thought.

“When Lily is old enough to choose whether she wants it.”
