Chapter 19 - One Year Later

One year later, the marble staircase was still there.
Arthur had considered replacing it.
Dr. Chen told him not to turn the house into a monument to fear.
So he changed smaller things.
A visible security system everyone understood.
She raced up the stairs now.
Elena still told her not to run.
Some rules were just rules.
Margaret remained impossible.
Arthur loved her for it.
The trusts were managed by an independent institution with Rachel as legal monitor.
Arthur could not move money alone.
Neither could anyone else.
He preferred it that way.
His company survived his leave.
That taught him something embarrassing.
The world kept moving without him.
He began working fewer nights.
Real life was not a movie.
But when Lily asked:
“Will you be home?”
He answered honestly.
Reliability rebuilt trust faster than speeches.
Elena eventually reduced her hours.
Lily needed less supervision.
Arthur hated how much that saddened him.
“You’re firing me,” Elena joked.
“You’re escaping.”
“Same thing.”
“You can’t leave.”
“I’m not disappearing.”
“Promise?”
“Promise.”
Lily looked at Arthur.
He said:
“People can leave work and still love you.”
That sentence was for all of them.
One afternoon, Rachel brought Arthur a sealed envelope.
Victoria’s letter to Lily.
The court had approved storing it.
Lily did not need to see it.
Arthur placed it in the family safe.
Then Rachel handed him another envelope.
“What’s this?”
“Grace’s final estate memo.”
“There are no more final documents.”
“Apparently Grace disagreed.”
Arthur, if you finally learned to look before explaining, then I can stop worrying.
Rachel looked over his shoulder.
“Sounds like her.”
Arthur laughed through tears.
Then Lily shouted from upstairs:
“Daddy! Come look!”
May you like
He stood immediately.
“I’m coming.”
