Chapter 6 - The Blue Box

The blue lockbox was not in the house.

Lily knew where it was.

“Mommy’s garden.”

Grace had loved the greenhouse behind Margaret’s home.

Arthur, Margaret, and Rachel searched before sunrise.

Behind a loose stone beneath the potting bench, they found a sealed metal container.

Inside:

Arthur used Lily’s key.

A handwritten notebook.

And one photograph.

Victoria and Charles Mercer sitting together at a restaurant.

Grace had written a date on the back.

Six months before her death.

Rachel opened the notebook.

Grace documented conversations.

Victoria asking about Lily’s inheritance.

Charles asking whether Arthur had updated his estate plan.

Payments from Grace to Victoria.

Then something else.

HAYES FAMILY CONSULTING.

The company belonged to Victoria.

Grace’s notebook showed three payments from a trust vendor to Hayes Family Consulting.

Total:

$186,000.

“From Lily’s trust?”

“Possibly.”

Rachel opened the flash drive.

Bank statements confirmed it.

Charles had approved “family support consulting” payments after Grace’s death.

Arthur had never seen them.

“How?”

Rachel said:

“You authorized Charles to manage administrative expenses during probate.”

“I thought that ended.”

“It should have.”

But Charles kept access through a legacy account.

Then they found the worst page.

A proposed guardianship timeline.

Step one:

Document unsafe behavior.

Step two:

Establish parental absence.

Step three:

Request temporary placement.

Step four:

Reorganize trust management.

Arthur’s hands shook.

Grace had found the outline before she died.

Why had she hidden it instead of going to police?

The notebook answered.

NO PROOF YET. ONLY DRAFTS. NEED DOCUMENTS.

Grace died before she could finish.

Then Rachel clicked one final file on the flash drive.

“Victoria, why are you asking Charles how to remove Arthur as trustee?”

Victoria answered:

“Because he’ll fall apart when you die.”

Then Grace said:

“If you ever use my death to take my daughter, I will make sure Arthur knows exactly who you are.”

The recording ended.

Rachel looked at Arthur.

“Victoria knew this box existed.”

May you like

Arthur nodded.

“And yesterday, she thought Lily was finally going to tell me where the key was.”
