Chapter 14 - The Capacity Attack

Richard’s filing said I was grieving.

Emotionally unstable.

Financially impulsive.

Vulnerable to manipulation.

His evidence?

I sold fifteen acres after my husband died.

I canceled wedding services in anger.

I “misunderstood” loan documents.

He wanted a temporary conservator appointed for property decisions.

Candidate:

I laughed again when Susan read it.

“He used my name?”

“Yes.”

“Without asking?”

“Yes.”

“Can I refuse?”

“Absolutely.”

He signed an affidavit.

My mother is competent. I will not serve. I believe this petition is being used to gain leverage over disputed real estate.

Then my doctor submitted a routine statement.

No cognitive impairment.

No medical basis for incapacity.

Claire provided wedding records showing why I canceled.

The bank provided the fraud affidavit.

Richard had tried to turn self-protection into evidence of instability.

The judge denied emergency relief in less than an hour.

Then something unexpected happened.

North Ridge’s suspended development deal had leaked.

Susan told me not to comment.

He told a local business paper that “family emotions” were interfering with a major community investment.

That phrase made me furious enough to become calm.

I agreed to one statement.

I am disputing documents bearing my name that I did not sign. I support lawful development when lawful owners consent. Grief is not consent.

Not widow blocks progress.

Developer dispute tied to alleged forgery.

Richard hated that.

Tiffany called Daniel screaming.

Elaine called me crying.

Claire received threats online.

Then investigators executed a search warrant at Richard’s office.

They seized computers.

A custom signature stamp.

Susan stared at the evidence photo.

“Did you ever authorize this?”

“No.”

The stamp had been ordered six months ago.

Shipping name:

Tiffany Bennett.

The family plan had not begun at the wedding.

It had begun long before I sold the first acre.
