Chapter 15 - The Stamp

Tiffany was arrested two days later on fraud-related charges.

Not handcuffed in a ballroom.

No cinematic scene.

She surrendered with counsel.

Richard did the same later.

Elaine was not charged initially.

Daniel gave another statement.

The case became larger than our family.

Investigators found Richard had used similar tactics before.

Distressed borrowers.

Pressure tied to property.

Not forged family signatures every time.

But enough ugly deals to trigger more reviews.

The $1.1 million development breakup fee came due.

Richard could not pay it.

His lending company froze new activity.

The empire he built around leverage began collapsing under its own paperwork.

Meanwhile, Daniel’s restaurant company entered restructuring.

One location closed.

The profitable location survived under a new operator.

Nineteen jobs stayed.

Daniel took responsibility in person.

Moved into a smaller apartment.

Started working as a salaried manager at another restaurant.

One afternoon, he came to the farm wearing work boots.

“I brought something.”

$1,200.

“What is this?”

“First payment.”

“For?”

“The wedding.”

“You owe more than forty-five thousand.”

“I know.”

“You’re bankrupt.”

“I know.”

“Then why?”

“Because I need to start somewhere.”

I said:

“Pay the workers your company still owes.”

“Then?”

“Then we talk.”

He put the check away.

Months earlier he would have argued.

The forged bridge loan was officially voided.

The lien against my remaining property would be released.

I sat on the porch and cried.

Not relief exactly.

Then Susan added:

“There’s one more thing.”

The unrelated buyer who purchased my fifteen acres wanted out of Richard’s option dispute.

They were willing to sell the acreage back.

I stared at the field across the creek.

I could afford it.

Barely.

Thomas’s voice returned.

Let it be because you choose what comes next.

For the first time, I did not know whether buying it back was love or another rescue.
