Chapter 19 - The Ring

I found Tiffany’s wedding invitation in a drawer.

Heavy paper.

Gold lettering.

A ridiculous wax seal.

I almost threw it away.

Then I noticed Thomas’s notebook beneath it.

I opened to the first page.

His handwriting:

Margaret complains I keep too many receipts.

It no longer swallowed the room.

Daniel arrived carrying groceries.

He noticed the invitation.

“You keeping that?”

“I don’t know.”

“Burn it.”

“Dramatic.”

“Runs in the family.”

Then he placed something on the table.

“I found it in the glove compartment.”

“What are you giving it to me for?”

“I’m not.”

“I just don’t know what to do with it.”

Objects become heavier when a story collapses.

“Sell it.”

He looked surprised.

“And do what?”

“Pay your creditors.”

“Of course.”

Weeks later he did.

Thomas would approve.

Then I received a letter from Tiffany.

I did not open it immediately.

Months later, I did.

No excuses for the slap.

Some explanation for her fear of Richard.

Admission that she confused luxury with safety and my generosity with weakness.

Forgiveness does not require correspondence.

Daniel asked if I forgave her.

“I’m not angry every morning anymore.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“It’s the only one I have.”

Then said:

“Do you forgive me?”

I looked at my son.

There are questions parents want to answer quickly.

This one deserved time.

“I love you.”

“That’s not an answer either.”

“No.”

I took his hand.

May you like

“But it’s where we start.”

That was enough for both of us.
