Chapter 20 - The Next Wedding

Two years after Tiffany slapped me beneath crystal chandeliers, I attended another wedding.
Claire’s.
Small.
Seventy-four guests.
Garden ceremony.
Daniel sat beside me.
He had rebuilt his life quietly.
One credit card he paid in full.
No restaurant empire.
He looked healthier.
At dinner, a server offered champagne.
Daniel glanced at me.
I raised one eyebrow.
He almost choked laughing.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
“Say it.”
“How much is left?”
I laughed so loudly three people turned.
For a moment, the old question lost its power.
Later, I walked outside alone.
The sunset reminded me of the field Thomas sold hay from every August.
I still missed the fifteen acres.
I probably always would.
But loss was not the same as ruin.
The remaining Bennett property was protected under a new trust.
Independent trustee.
No family member could borrow against it alone.
That was intentional.
Love should not be the only lock on a door.
Claire came outside in her wedding dress.
“You okay?”
“Yes.”
“Really?”
“Really.”
Music floated through the garden.
I thought of Tiffany’s hand.
Every moment when I believed saying no would cost me my family.
Saying no was what gave us a chance to become one again.
Daniel came outside.
“Mom, they’re cutting cake.”
“I’m coming.”
I slipped my arm through his.
Then I looked back once at the lights.
I had spent years believing generosity meant giving until nothing remained.
Thomas knew better.
Generosity without boundaries becomes permission.
Love without truth becomes debt.
And family without respect becomes a bill no one should keep paying.

This time, I walked back inside because I wanted to.
And no one asked me to pay for the champagne.
