Chapter 13 - The Shot

Vincent hit the floor clutching his shoulder.
I crawled toward Ethan.
Rebecca swung the gun toward me.
“Stop!”
Then Alexander stepped from the darkness behind her.
He had ignored every instruction to remain outside.
“Put it down, Rebecca.”
She froze.
For the first time, I saw emotion break through her control.
“Little brother.”
Alexander looked at Ethan.
“Rachel, get him out.”
Rebecca lifted the gun slightly.
“You always did get to keep everything.”
“I thought you were dead.”
“Father preferred it that way.”
Police sirens grew louder outside.
Rebecca laughed.
“You brought them.”
“I brought witnesses.”
Her eyes filled with something between rage and grief.
“You think you’re innocent because nobody told you?”
“No.” Alexander’s voice was quiet. “I think ignorance is not innocence.”
That stopped her.
He continued. “If my father stole money, I’ll repay it. If my company was built on crimes, I’ll expose them.”
“You’ll destroy the Whitmore name.”
“Then it deserves to be destroyed.”
Rebecca stared at him.
The gun lowered one inch.
Vincent used the moment.
He kicked her ankle.
The weapon skidded across the concrete.
Officers rushed in.
Ethan was free in seconds.
I wrapped him in my arms so tightly he complained he couldn’t breathe.
Rebecca was handcuffed.
As officers led her out, she looked at Alexander.
“You still don’t know who changed Claire’s medication.”
Alexander stopped.
“What medication?”
Rebecca smiled.
May you like
“She didn’t fall because Vanessa pushed her.”
Then she disappeared into the flashing lights outside.
