Chapter 16 - Behind the Wall

We searched the nursery after midnight.

Behind the bookshelf, Vincent found one screw newer than the others.

The panel came away.

Inside was a sealed envelope wrapped in plastic.

ALEXANDER - WHEN YOU ARE READY TO STOP PROTECTING THE NAME.

His hands shook as he opened it.

Claire’s letter was twelve pages.

She confessed everything.

She had originally contacted Rebecca.

She had entered Whitmore Dynamics intending to expose Grant Whitmore’s old fraud.

Then she met Alexander.

Then Noah was born.

And truth became more complicated because innocent employees and pensioners would be hurt by one reckless disclosure.

So Claire built a different plan.

A restitution fund.

A voluntary forensic audit.

Protected disclosures to regulators.

A way to expose crimes without destroying people who had nothing to do with them.

Thomas opposed it.

Nolan secretly sold details to Rebecca.

Vanessa saw opportunity.

The last page contained a handwritten note.

If I die, do not preserve my reputation. Preserve the evidence.

Alexander sat on the nursery floor.

For a long time, he said nothing.

Then Noah woke and began to cry.

Alexander lifted him from the crib.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered.

Not to me.

To Claire.

The next morning he called an emergency board meeting.

He placed Claire’s letter, the trust documents, the foundation records, and the toxicology report on the table.

“I’m opening everything,” he said.

One director stood.

“You’ll destroy the company.”

Alexander looked at him.

“No. The people who stole from it did that.”

Then the board secretary entered with a sealed envelope.

“Sir, this was delivered ten minutes ago.”

Inside was a photograph of Noah sleeping.

Taken that morning.
