Chapter 11 - Ethan’s FatherEthan’s father, Richard Vance, had died six years earlier.

Heart attack.

No mystery.

No secret survival.

But the note was his handwriting.

Arthur knew it.

So did Ethan.

Rebecca compared old letters.

Match.

How could a dead man leave a note now?

The answer was simpler than supernatural.

Someone had taken it from Richard’s old files.

The sentence had originally been written to Arthur during a fight twenty-five years earlier.

Different context.

Same words.

Someone cut it out and reused it.

Sarah asked:

“Who has access to Richard’s papers?”

Ethan answered:

“My mother.”

Arthur added:

“And the family archivist.”

The archivist was gone.

Retired.

But his assistant still worked at the estate.

A man named Colin Mercer.

Officer Brooks interviewed him.

Colin denied taking anything.

Then security footage showed him entering Arthur’s quarters.

He admitted Eleanor ordered him to retrieve “family documents.”

He took Caroline’s box.

He also planted the old note to make Arthur look compromised.

Eleanor’s attorney called it an unauthorized employee action.

Colin laughed when told.

“She paid me twenty grand.”

Bank records confirmed it.

Another wall cracked.

Police recovered Caroline’s box from Colin’s garage.

Inside were copies of Harbor East invoices.

A second cassette.

And letters Caroline wrote to Ethan but never mailed.

The first began:

Dear Ethan, your mother will tell you I abandoned the family. That is partly true.

Ethan’s eyes filled.

Caroline wrote that she loved him.

That she left because staying meant becoming cruel.

She warned him:

Your mother mistakes control for protection. Your father mistakes silence for peace. Do not inherit either habit.

Ethan stopped reading.

Sarah took his hand.

The final letter was addressed:

TO THE MOTHER OF ETHAN’S FIRST CHILD.

Sarah opened it.

If you are reading this, Eleanor probably knows the audit trigger exists.

Sarah’s throat tightened.

Caroline continued.

Do not let her convince you the baby is causing the family to break. The break was already there. The child only turns on the light.

Sarah cried.

Then she found a key taped inside the envelope.

A small gold key.

Arthur recognized it.

“The private records room.”

Ethan frowned.

“In the estate?”

“No.”

Arthur looked toward the city skyline.

May you like

“At Vance Holdings headquarters.”

And that room had been sealed since Caroline left.
