Chapter 17 - The TrialEleanor chose trial on the terrace charge.

On the financial charges, negotiations narrowed several issues.

She would not admit she intended Sarah to fall over the railing.

Her defense argued she shoved Sarah away during an argument and did not expect the fall.

The prosecution argued the force, position, and immediate cover-up mattered.

Sarah testified.

She hated every second.

The courtroom was too quiet.

Eleanor sat fifteen feet away.

Sarah described the ultrasound.

The words.

The shove.

The air disappearing beneath her feet.

Arthur testified next.

Forty years of service.

One minute of truth.

Eleanor’s attorney asked:

“You dislike Mrs. Vance now, correct?”

Arthur answered:

“I dislike what she did.”

“Not my question.”

Arthur looked at Eleanor.

“No. I do not hate her.”

That surprised everyone.

“Why not?”

Arthur thought.

“Because hate would turn forty years of my life into a lie. Some of those years were good.”

Then:

“But good years do not erase one terrible choice.”

Sarah cried quietly.

The housekeepers testified.

The analog footage played.

Martin testified under cooperation terms.

He admitted removing the recorder.

Admitted financial misconduct.

Admitted Eleanor told him the baby’s birth would cost them control.

He could not testify that she planned the shove in advance.

He did not know.

That honesty made the rest stronger.

The jury deliberated.

Ethan sat with Sarah.

Arthur sat behind them.

No speeches.

No predictions.

When the verdict came, Eleanor was convicted on charges tied to the assault and evidence tampering.

Other financial matters were resolved through separate pleas and civil judgments.

Eleanor closed her eyes.

Ethan did not smile.

Sarah did not either.

Outside court, reporters shouted.

“Mrs. Vance, do you forgive her?”

Sarah stopped.

She had learned to hate that question.

Forgiveness as public performance.

“No.”

Cameras leaned closer.

She continued:

“I also don’t wake up every morning thinking about her.”

That was the victory.

Then her water broke on the courthouse steps.

Arthur looked down.

“Oh.”

Sarah laughed and cried at the same time.

Ethan panicked.

“Is this happening?”

Arthur took out his phone.

May you like

Calm as ever.

“I believe this is what ambulances are actually for.”
