Chapter 5 - The Audit TriggerRebecca moved quickly.

She notified the independent trustee.

The pregnancy was already medically documented.

The trust trigger activated that afternoon.

Eleanor lost effective voting control before dinner.

She called Ethan seventeen times.

He answered once.

“What have you done?”

He almost laughed.

“I had a baby?”

“This is not a joke.”

“No.”

His voice hardened.

“My wife is in the hospital because you pushed her.”

Eleanor lowered her voice.

“You have no idea what your grandfather did to this family.”

“Then explain it.”

“You’re choosing her over me.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

There it was.

Always a contest.

“I’m choosing facts.”

She hung up.

Martin Shaw called next.

Ethan let Rebecca answer.

Martin sounded calm.

“This audit will damage the company.”

Rebecca said:

“Then clean books should help.”

No answer.

She continued.

“Where is the old security recorder?”

Martin ended the call.

Officer Brooks obtained a warrant for Martin’s office and relevant devices.

The CFO did not wait.

By evening, he had disappeared from the corporate tower.

His assistant found his desk cleared.

Laptop gone.

Phone off.

Then Sarah received a hospital visitor.

Eleanor.

Security stopped her at the elevator.

Sarah watched through the glass doors.

Eleanor stood there in a cream coat, perfectly composed.

She held a bouquet.

Like a mother-in-law bringing flowers.

Sarah felt physically sick.

Eleanor asked security:

“May I at least give her this?”

Sarah said:

“No.”

The guard relayed it.

Eleanor looked through the glass.

Their eyes met.

Then Eleanor slowly lowered the flowers.

Her mouth formed two words.

Ungrateful girl.

Sarah almost laughed.

Then Arthur entered the hallway behind Eleanor.

She turned.

“You.”

Arthur stopped several feet away.

“Yes, ma’am.”

“You betrayed this family.”

“No.”

His voice stayed calm.

“I stopped confusing service with silence.”

Eleanor’s face tightened.

Then she leaned closer.

“You think Charles trusted you?”

Arthur said nothing.

“He used you.”

Arthur answered:

“Maybe.”

Then Eleanor smiled.

“Did you tell Ethan what happened to the first ledger?”

Arthur went completely still.

Sarah saw it from inside the room.

Eleanor walked away.

When Arthur entered, Sarah asked:

“What first ledger?”

He did not answer.

“Arthur.”

He looked at her.

“Mr. Vance kept two.”

“Where’s the other one?”

Arthur’s voice dropped.

“His daughter found it.”

Sarah frowned.

“Eleanor?”

“No.”

Arthur looked toward the hallway.

“Ethan’s aunt, Caroline.”

May you like

Sarah had never met Caroline Vance.

Because according to the family, Caroline had died twenty-three years ago.
