Chapter 14 - THE SON WHO FINALLY CHOSE

Audrey moved before Brenda understood what Preston had done.
She shoved the chair backward into Marco’s knees.
The gun slipped from his hand.
Preston kicked it beneath a cabinet.
Brenda screamed.
“You idiot!”
Preston blocked her path.
“No, Mom.”
“Move.”
“No.”
Audrey ran toward the kitchen door.
Marco grabbed her coat.
She twisted free, leaving the coat in his fist.
A horn sounded outside.
Rocco had arrived.
Brenda’s confidence vanished.
She grabbed a fireplace poker and swung at Preston.
He took the blow on his shoulder and fell.
Audrey stopped.
Preston shouted, “Keep going!”
She did.
Rocco met her at the back steps and wrapped both arms around her.
“Baby?” he asked.
“Still moving.”
He almost collapsed with relief.
Gary’s men entered from both sides of the house.
Marco surrendered.
Brenda did not.
She ran upstairs.
Rocco started after her.
Audrey caught his sleeve.
“Dad.”
He looked back.
“Don’t become her.”
The words stopped him.
Gary nodded and sent two guards instead.
They brought Brenda down in handcuffs three minutes later.
She looked at Audrey and smiled strangely.
“You think you won?”
Audrey said nothing.
Brenda turned to Rocco.
“The ledger proves your wife knew everything.”
“I know.”
“No.”
Brenda leaned closer.
“It proves Sofia was part of it before she turned against us.”
Rocco’s expression changed.
Audrey felt another truth approaching.
“What is she talking about?”
Brenda laughed.
“Ask your father where the Bellini fortune came from.”
The police sirens reached the property.

Rocco looked at the leather ledger in Gary’s hands.
And for the first time that night, he looked ashamed.
