Chapter 18 - THE FORGED AMENDMENT

The signature looked perfect.

Preston stared at it for a long time.

“That isn’t mine.”

Audrey did not know what to believe anymore.

Gary examined the notary block.

The notary was dead.

Carlo had chosen well.

Rocco wanted to attack the document through every lawyer he had.

Audrey chose something simpler.

“Find the original.”

Sofia’s trust required every amendment to have a matching paper copy stored with the founding documents.

No paper copy existed at the bank.

That meant Carlo’s filing could be exposed as fraudulent if they found the original archive intact.

Gary remembered a second safe beneath the old river warehouse.

They returned with federal agents this time.

Behind a concrete wall in Room 214, investigators found a steel box.

Inside were Sofia’s original trust documents, Thomas Hale’s handwritten notes, and a stack of blank notarized signature pages stolen from Preston years earlier.

Preston recognized them.

“My mother made me sign these when I was twenty-one.”

“For what?” Audrey asked.

“She said they were for my father’s estate.”

One blank page had the exact notary stamp used on the fraudulent amendment.

The scheme was finally clear.

Brenda had kept Preston’s signatures for years.

Carlo used one when Audrey became pregnant.

The amendment collapsed before the day ended.

But agents found something else in the steel box.

A cassette tape labeled FOR ROCCO.

The voice on it belonged to Thomas Hale.

“If you hear this, I’m probably dead.”

Preston sat down hard.

Thomas continued.

“Do not blame my son for Brenda’s choices.”

Then came the sentence that made Rocco shut his eyes.

“And do not let Audrey marry him until he knows what his mother did.”

Audrey looked at Rocco.

“You had this warning in your building.”

Rocco whispered, “I never knew the box existed.”

Gary stared at the floor.

But his face said he might have.
