Chapter 19 - THE LAST THING GARY HID

Audrey asked everyone except Gary to leave the warehouse room.
“You knew about the box.”
Gary did not lie.
“Yes.”
Rocco turned back from the door.
“You told me you didn’t.”
“I told you Sofia left records.”
“You let my daughter marry into that family.”
Gary’s face tightened.
“I failed her.”
Audrey waited.
Gary explained that Sofia ordered the steel box sealed unless three conditions happened together: Audrey became pregnant, someone attacked the trust, and Rocco agreed to expose the old Bellini network.
Before that, opening it could have alerted Carlo through an old legal monitoring service.
“So you obeyed a dead woman instead of warning me?” Audrey asked.
“Yes.”
“That wasn’t your choice to make.”
“I know.”
She was tired of men saying that after the damage was done.
Rocco fired Gary from every Bellini company that afternoon.
Gary accepted it.
“You should.”
But before leaving, he gave Audrey the key to Sofia’s archive.
“It belongs to you now.”
Two weeks later, Brenda accepted a plea deal that required her to describe Carlo’s entire plan.
She admitted attacking Audrey intentionally.
She admitted wanting the baby gone before the trust could activate.
She also admitted using Preston’s fear of his father’s death to keep him obedient.
Preston listened from another room and cried without making a sound.
Audrey did not go to him.
She had moved into a smaller house near the hospital.
Rocco visited only when invited.
For the first time, everyone was learning that love did not create a right to control her.
Then, at thirty-eight weeks, Audrey woke before dawn with a sharp contraction.
She reached for her phone.

Before she could dial, the lights in the house went out.
And someone knocked once on the front door.
