Chapter 16 - GARY’S NAME

Rocco reached for the ledger.
Gary did not run.
He sat down.
“I wondered when you’d get to that page.”
Audrey stared at him.
“You were part of it.”
“Yes.”
Rocco’s voice turned dangerous.
“How much?”
Gary looked at his oldest friend.
“Enough to be ashamed.”
He admitted he had moved money through two false vendors when he was twenty-six.
Sofia caught him.
Instead of exposing him immediately, she made him help trace the entire network.
“Why would she trust you?” Audrey asked.
“She didn’t.”
Gary gave a tired smile.
“She gave me a chance to earn back what I had thrown away.”
He spent the next decade quietly returning money, preserving records, and protecting the trust.
Rocco looked betrayed anyway.
“You never told me.”
“Sofia asked me not to until you were ready to stop defending the past.”
Rocco almost struck him.
Then he lowered his hand.
Audrey watched both men and realized what her mother had understood years earlier.
Power did not make people honest.
Being forced to face consequences sometimes did.
Gary slid a sealed envelope toward Audrey.
“Sofia left this with me.”
“Another secret?”
“The last one.”
Inside was a letter addressed to Audrey’s unborn child.
If you are reading this someday, it means adults tried to make you carry their greed before you could even speak.
You owe them nothing.
You owe the family name nothing.
Use what I left you to repair what we damaged, then build something that does not require fear to survive.
Audrey cried quietly.
At the bottom, Sofia had written one final instruction.
Rocco must turn over the ledger himself.
If he refuses, Audrey must do it for him.
Audrey placed the letter in front of her father.
Rocco read it twice.

Then he picked up his phone.
“Call the federal prosecutor.”
