Chapter 17 - THE WOMEN IN WHITE

Vanessa Caldwell sued no one.

Her family released a cold statement and moved on.

Madeline Royce called Alexander privately and apologized for participating.

She gave outside investigators every message Eleanor sent her family.

Those messages proved the selection ceremony was not illegal.

Sometimes truth does not produce handcuffs.

Alexander survived the confidence vote by one seat.

Not because directors approved of his choices.

Because Lydia’s trust held a block of voting shares none of them had remembered Noah would inherit.

The independent trustee refused to support a removal based on “family image management.”

Eleanor resigned from the Sterling Foundation board.

She moved into her townhouse for several months and began therapy.

“Emma.”

“Mrs. Sterling.”

She winced. “Eleanor is fine.”

“I’m not there yet.”

She folded her hands. “I owe you an apology.”

“Yes.”

People like Eleanor probably heard “you don’t have to” often.

She continued. “I treated your bond with Noah as a threat because it existed outside structures I controlled.”

“I also treated your employment needs as leverage.”

“Yes.”

“And I allowed Caroline to believe harsh methods would please me.”

“Yes.”

Her eyes watered. “I did not threaten your niece.”

“I believe you.”

I added, “That doesn’t erase the rest.”

“No.”

She looked out the window. “I am afraid Noah will hate me.”

“He might be angry.”

“That’s not the same.”

“No.”

Then she asked, “Do you hate me?”

I thought. “No.”

Her eyes filled. “That is kinder than I deserve.”

“It isn’t kindness.”

I leaned forward. “I don’t want to spend that much energy on you.”

“Lydia would have liked you.”

I looked at her. “Maybe.”

Then Eleanor said, “She did know about you.”

My stomach tightened. “What?”

Sent by Lydia’s sister Rose three weeks before Rose died.

You should know the new maid is the first person he has trusted this quickly since Lydia.
